Strength in Numbers: Nighttime Vigilance

When the sun goes down and the streets grow quiet, the need for heightened alertness increases. For those coming home late from a farbrengen or a late shift at work, the power of community presence is the best defense.

“There is absolute strength in numbers,” advises Yaacov Prager, who draws on his years of experience coordinating Crown Heights Shmirah. “If you must walk alone, stick to well-lit avenues and avoid cutting through dark alleys or empty parks. Always project confidence—walk with purpose and let people know you are aware of your surroundings.” He strongly urges residents not to brush off suspicious behavior, such as someone lurking around a driveway or testing car doors, but rather to call Shmirah immediately.

Despite the rapid response of local volunteers, Prager maintains a grounded perspective on their role. “I always remind our volunteers and our residents: we are just the messengers,” said Yaacov Prager. “We patrol, we respond, and we keep our eyes peeled, but it is Hashem’s loving grace that wraps around Crown Heights and keeps us safe from harm.”
