“People look for an unlocked door, an open window on the ground floor, or a package left on a dark porch,” explains Yanky Prager, the founder of Crown Heights Chaverim, which has since grown to become a vital branch of Crown Heights Shmirah. “Keeping the community safe starts at your own front door. Always double-check your deadbolts before you go to sleep, and leave a porch light on.” He also stresses the importance of looking out for one another, encouraging neighbors to call each other if a door is accidentally left open.
This communal responsibility is part of the area’s unique fabric. “We do our *hishtadlus*—our physical effort—by locking our doors and reporting suspicious activity,” Yanky Prager added, “but we can sleep soundly knowing that the Guardian of Israel never slumbers. Hashem is the ultimate shield over our homes.”
